The number of container refusals by the Food and Drug Administration remained high in May following a record set the previous month. Vinyl exam glove refusals decreased by half in May, but latex and nitrile glove refusals both spiked.

Only 3 container refusals of latex exam gloves between June and November of last year. Since then, 30 containers have been refused, perhaps due in part to a rush to meet increased demand created by the Swine Flu pandemic.

A new food safety law took effect today in China, which includes new regulations pertaining to the import and export of food. The FDA has posted a translated version of the new law onto its web site.

After months of relief following last summer’s record prices, oil is at its highest price in seven months. The commodity is trading around $68 a barrel today, stimulated by a recovering Chinese economy and a weak US dollar.

An derivative of oil, vinyl gloves costs are heavily impacted by fluctuations in commodity prices. Higher oil costs also typically lead to increased freight charges.
